Children and
Disasters
Like
any other great tragedy, the impact of Hurricane Katrina is long-lasting,
dramatic and full of twist and turns. The post traumatic symptoms are great for
those affected, especially children. Even thought it happened in August of
2005, the memories are unforgettable. Most of Katrina’s psychological tragedy
in the form of post traumatic stress syndrome, chronic depression, etc. still
exist I the lives of children that suffered even though they’re older.
However,
issues of race and poverty, which were discussed in the March 2006 Special
Section, continued to be ignored and not embraced by some policy makers. The
entire area hasn’t fully recovered, in areas where there are numerous Early
Learning Centers and Elementary Schools, there continues to be an outpouring of
philanthropic and voluntary assistance to those affected communities. They
assist by doing group therapy sessions, one-on-one art therapy which seems to
work best for children. This helps them with their verbal expressions.

Clarencia,
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful post about hurricane Katrina and the affects it had on children. I think a lot of the time when natural disasters occur the effects it has on the children in the community might be over looked. There is so much to recover from after something like that. One literally has to put back together a community. I was glad to read there is group therapy for these children out there. Wonderful post and great pictures! Thanks for sharing.
Very touching and warm spirit Clarencia, I am sure if they could pick up where they left off from they wound but unfortunately it is hard to do for a child experiencing this kind of ordeal. However, a wish for continuity and sameness is normal and widespread among young children (Berger, 2012). Indeed, group therapy session is the key to help cope with children to benefit from adults who can help them learn how to continue effectively after a major change in there lives. Enjoyed the positive blog post.
ReplyDeleteThanks and I'm glad you all enjoyed the post!
